The mysterious death of an Ambrose Alli University lecturer inside a hotel in Ekpoma, Edo State, has triggered a police investigation, with three people arrested over the incident.
The deceased, identified as Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026, inside a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death remained unclear on Tuesday as detectives began piecing together what happened during his final moments.
Among those arrested are the hotel owner, the manager and a 21-year-old woman, Angela Defa Jacob, who was reportedly with Uwuigbe shortly before he was found dead.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a distress report at about 8pm on Monday concerning the lecturer.
According to the police, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel and engaged the services of the woman before later asking her to leave the room to buy water.
But when Jacob returned, she reportedly found the lecturer lying lifeless inside the room and raised the alarm.
The incident prompted the police to move in, leading to the arrest of the three suspects as investigators began questioning them over what happened before the lecturer’s death.
The police, however, have not disclosed any finding linking any of the arrested persons to the death, stressing that the investigation is still ongoing.
Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending further investigation and other necessary procedures.
The development has caused concern within the AAU community, with the university confirming that the deceased was a member of its academic staff.
However, the institution said the incident happened outside the university and was not connected with its official activities.
The university spokesperson, Otunba Aladenika, also clarified that the woman reportedly found with the lecturer was not a student of AAU.
He said the university could confirm Uwuigbe as a staff member but maintained that the events leading to his death occurred in his private life and outside the institution.
