Panic gripped Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday after a helicopter crashed into a swampy area of the riverine community.
The crash reportedly occurred in the morning in an area inside the creek, making access to the scene difficult for residents and emergency responders.
The fate of the occupants remained uncertain as of press time, although local sources said those aboard the ill-fated helicopter were feared dead.
Residents reportedly heard a loud sound from the direction of the creek before news of the crash spread through the community.
The crash site was said to be located around the area opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda, with police and military personnel subsequently moving into the area as rescue and security operations got underway.
Ilaje Local Government Chairman, Maurice Oripelaye, also confirmed the incident, while reports indicated that military-related equipment was found around the crash site.
However, authorities had yet to officially establish the identity of the helicopter, the number of people on board or whether there were survivors.
A resident who spoke about the incident said the swampy terrain prevented people in the community from getting close to the crash site.
According to the resident, people could only watch events from a distance as security personnel moved towards the area.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area and said investigations had commenced.
Police spokesman, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said details of the incident were still emerging as authorities worked to determine exactly what happened.
He urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
The police said further details would be released once credible information became available.
The incident comes amid renewed attention to helicopter safety in Nigeria, following previous fatal helicopter crashes in the country. Investigators typically examine the wreckage, flight records, weather conditions, maintenance history and other available evidence when determining the cause of an aviation accident.
For now, the number of casualties remains unconfirmed, while emergency personnel continue efforts at the difficult-to-reach crash site.
