The 2027 presidency battle has taken another turn, with former Zamfara State Governor and Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Abdul’aziz Yari, warning northerners against insisting that power must return to the region.
Yari said making northern ownership of the presidency a condition for political support could threaten Nigeria’s unity.
He spoke on Sunday while addressing prominent Islamic scholars at the residence of the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi in Bauchi State.
The APC PCC director-general said Nigeria’s diversity required a leadership arrangement that gives different parts of the country opportunities to produce the President.
“If we say that nobody is going to rule Nigeria except somebody from the North, we have divided ourselves,” Yari said.
He argued that political power should not be permanently tied to one region, stressing that leadership from different parts of the country would help sustain national unity.
“It is pertinent that when we are together as a country and united, leaders will come from different parts of the country,” he said.
Yari advocated a rotational arrangement between the North and South, saying, “When a President is elected from the North, another President should be elected from the South. That is the solution to our diversity.”
His comments came as the APC Presidential Campaign Council intensified consultations with religious and other influential stakeholders ahead of the 2027 political activities.
The delegation had earlier visited Jos, Plateau State, where it paid a condolence visit to Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir following the death of the National Treasurer of JIBWIS.
The team also held consultations with other key stakeholders as part of its ongoing engagements across the country.
Yari urged Nigerians to support a leadership arrangement based on national unity, rather than demands that the presidency must belong to a particular region.
