A mechanic identified simply as Samson has been allegedly lured to his death in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, in what an anti-cultism platform claimed was a fresh act of retaliation following the killing of a suspected cult member in the area.
Samson, who operated a mechanic workshop around Warike Estate, Abijo, was reportedly contacted to repair a Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday, September 15.
But what appeared to be a routine call-out job allegedly turned into a deadly trap.
According to a police source, the mechanic left his workshop after being contacted to attend to the vehicle. On reaching the location, he was allegedly taken into a bush and hacked to death.
The police source said suspected cultists were believed to be behind the killing, although the motive and identity of the perpetrators were still being investigated.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, also confirmed that the case had been reported after Samson’s family raised the alarm over his whereabouts.
She said detectives had visited his apartment and were making efforts to track his mobile phone as part of the investigation.
But a fresh account has now emerged, linking the mechanic’s killing to an earlier cult-related murder in the same Ibeju-Lekki axis.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform claimed Samson was killed in retaliation for the September 9 killing of a man identified as Ola Sheu, reportedly an Eiye member.
Sheu was allegedly killed around Adeba Bus Stop, Lakowe, in Ibeju-Lekki, with the platform accusing members of the NBM/Aye group of involvement.
The platform claimed Sheu’s alleged cult identity was not widely known until a photograph of him wearing an Eiye-associated beret during his graduation was posted online as part of a birthday celebration.
According to the platform, the photograph allegedly exposed his identity to rival cultists and led to his killing.
It further claimed that Samson’s murder was subsequently carried out as a revenge attack for Sheu’s death.
However, the alleged retaliation theory has not been independently confirmed by the police, who are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Samson’s killing.
The two incidents have nevertheless raised fresh concerns about a possible resurgence of cult violence in the Lakowe-Abijo-Ibeju-Lekki corridor, where rival groups have previously been linked to violent clashes.
For Samson, the alleged trap began with what looked like an ordinary request for mechanical work.
He went out expecting to repair a Mercedes-Benz.
He never returned.
Police are now investigating who arranged the supposed repair job, who took the mechanic into the bush and whether the alleged cult rivalry was indeed the motive behind his killing.
