Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has unveiled an unusual holiday plan if elected president in 2027 — spending his breaks in some of Nigeria’s security-challenged states instead of travelling abroad.
Obi made the promise at an NDC town hall meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, declaring that his administration would make security a major priority.
He said he would use his holidays to visit states such as Zamfara, Borno and Kano, as well as Oyo and Ondo, rather than leave the country.
“In four years, I will never take holidays outside this country. If I take a whole day, it will be in Zamfara, Borno, Kano. It will be in Oyo, in Ondo. That is what it should be,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor said the situation where Nigerians have to worry about their safety before travelling between states must end.
He recalled that people had questioned whether it was safe for him to travel to Kaduna, saying he used to drive from Lagos to Kaduna and other parts of the country without such fears.
“When I tell people I’m coming to Kaduna this morning, everybody’s telling you, are you sure? Are you not sure? How?”
Obi said an NDC administration would work to restore confidence in road travel and strengthen the country’s security architecture.
He also promised to pursue policies that would give children equal opportunities to succeed, regardless of their family background or connections.
“We want policies where every child will go to school, a nation where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.
