The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on Nigerians to prepare themselves for protest against the 50 per cent tariff hike for telecommunications’ services.
The telecommunication operators had demanded approval for services’ tarrif hike by 100 percent citing increasing cost of operation.
However, their desire which was met halfway in the shape of 50 percent by the Nigerian Communications Commission does not sit well with the NLC.
The workers’ union in a statement its President, Joe Ajaero, released on Wednesday, said the increase was insensitive and ill-timed, adding that Nigerians should be ready to boycott the telecom services in protest of the hike in order to stop the increment.
“The NLC calls on all Nigerian workers and masses to reject this unjustifiable tariff hike. We urge citizens to prepare for collective action, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to compel the reversal of this punitive increase.
“This is for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people. The Nigeria Labour Congress remains resolute in defending the interests of Nigerian workers and the masses. We will not allow the people to bear the brunt of policies that further entrench poverty and inequality.
“Together, we will do our best to resist this injustice and demand that the government prioritises the interests of its citizens over corporate interests,” Ajaero said.
