A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has landed in prison after she was caught allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Lagos during rainfall.
Monday was arrested in the Meiran area of Lagos on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, while allegedly disposing of waste into the drain.
She was subsequently taken before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the environmental offence.
The court convicted her and sentenced her to one month in prison.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, announced the conviction in a statement on Thursday, warning residents that indiscriminate waste disposal could attract serious penalties.
The authority said dumping refuse in drainage channels was particularly dangerous because it could block waterways and worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
LAWMA said it would continue working with relevant enforcement agencies to track down and prosecute people who violate Lagos environmental laws.
Residents were consequently urged to use approved waste-disposal channels and keep refuse out of drains, roads and other unauthorised locations.
The conviction comes as Lagos intensifies its campaign against indiscriminate waste disposal and other practices blamed for obstructing drainage systems and aggravating flooding across the state.
