The APC-led government recently called for the criminalisation of hate speech and directed the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to sanction any radio or television station that broadcasts hate speech.

“If you tune into many radio stations today, you will be shocked by the careless incitement to violence and the level of insensitivity to the multi-religious, multi-ethnic nature of our country.

“This must not be allowed to continue because it is detrimental to the unity and well-being of our country,” the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Thursday at the 3rd Annual Lecture Series of the NBC.

Reacting to the directive, Fani-kayode in a telephone interview he granted Punch said, “They insulted, threatened and rigged their way into power and all they have ever known is hate. Now that people are criticising them, they are labelling it as hate speech, which is not true. There is a distinction between vigorous opposition, harsh criticism and the expression of bitter truth on one hand and hate speech on the other hand. That is the lesson this government needs to learn.”
