Hospital workers and patients at P and G Hospital, Abule-Egba, Lagos State, have foiled an alleged attempt by a woman to steal a newborn baby.
The suspect was reportedly caught on Saturday after allegedly disguising herself as a pregnant woman in a bid to carry out the act.
She was said to have stuffed pieces of cloth under her clothes to create the impression that she was pregnant, while another woman allegedly posed as someone who had come to assist her with delivery.
The plot reportedly unravelled when hospital workers and patients became suspicious and confronted the suspect.
Videos circulating on social media showed the woman being restrained by a crowd as the pieces of cloth used to fake her pregnancy fell to the floor.
In one of the clips, a man dressed in traditional attire was seen slapping the suspect across the face as others questioned her over the alleged attempt.
Another video showed the woman being held and led into a car.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed on Sunday that the suspect had been taken into custody, while efforts were ongoing to track down her alleged accomplice, who was said to have fled.
The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
“The alleged perpetrator is currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the accomplice and charge the case to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” Adebisi said.
