Fear has gripped residents of Bauchi State as a fast-spreading eye infection popularly called “Apollo” sweeps across communities, with the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, revealing that he has also contracted the ailment.
The lawmaker raised the alarm in a Facebook post on Sunday, disclosing that he woke up to the disturbing eye condition and warning residents to take preventive measures against further spread.
Suleiman said, “By God’s grace, I woke up today with a highly contagious eye infection commonly known as ‘Apollo,’ which is currently spreading across Bauchi State.”
Expressing concern over the growing cases, the Speaker urged residents to be cautious, maintain cleanliness and take necessary steps to protect themselves and others.
He said, “I urge everyone to be vigilant, maintain good hygiene, and take appropriate preventive measures to help stop the further spread of the infection within the community.”
He also advised people to avoid sharing personal items such as towels and handkerchiefs, which could increase the risk of transmission.
Apollo, medically known as conjunctivitis, is a highly infectious eye condition that causes redness, irritation, itching, swelling and discharge. It can spread through direct contact with an infected person or by touching contaminated surfaces.
