The political earthquake rocking the Edo State House of Assembly has claimed its biggest casualty as Speaker Blessing Agbebaku has resigned from office amid a brewing impeachment storm.

Blessing Agbebaku reportedly bowed out on Monday after some lawmakers allegedly began moves to remove him as the presiding officer of the House.

Rather than face a full-blown impeachment process, the Speaker chose to vacate the seat.

The sudden resignation was announced by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a brief statement on Facebook.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS,” she wrote, adding that more details surrounding the development would be made public later.

Agbebaku’s exit has thrown the state legislature into fresh uncertainty, with lawmakers now faced with the task of picking a new Speaker to steer the affairs of the Assembly.

The former Speaker had recently found himself at the centre of an internal power struggle after allegations emerged of a plot by some lawmakers to impeach him and other principal officers of the House.

The crisis had reportedly deepened in the Assembly before Agbebaku eventually surrendered the gavel, marking another dramatic chapter in Edo’s political battles.

His resignation now opens a new power contest among lawmakers as different interests move to determine who takes control of the Edo Assembly.
