The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fired back at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his comments on the Abuja residence of former PDP deputy national chairman, Chief Olabode George.
The party accused Wike of making unfounded allegations against the elder statesman and challenged the minister to prove his claims, insisting that neither he nor the Rivers State Government had any connection to George’s Maitama residence.
In a statement issued on August 4, 2026, by the Lagos PDP Publicity Secretary, Prince Dr. Christopher Odianarewo, the party demanded that Wike withdraw his remarks, describing them as an attack on the reputation of a respected political leader.
The controversy started after Wike, during his monthly media briefing with journalists in Abuja, questioned the source of funds used to acquire George’s Maitama property.
The FCT minister had alleged that the residence was financed with Rivers State government funds and challenged the PDP chieftain to explain how the property was obtained. He also accused George of portraying the judiciary as corrupt whenever court judgments do not go in his favour.
Reacting, however, the Lagos PDP defended George, saying he had already been cleared of corruption allegations by the Supreme Court following his tenure as Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Board.
The party described Wike’s comments as reckless, warning that his position as FCT minister did not give him the power to intimidate citizens or use his office against private individuals.
Odianarewo said: “Wike’s reckless questioning of the ownership of Chief Bode George’s Abuja residence is a clear case of an affront and a dangerous abuse of office. Wike must be reminded that neither he nor Rivers State has any link whatsoever to Chief Olabode George’s private residence.”
The PDP spokesman also took a swipe at Wike’s political history, claiming that George was already a major figure within the party when the former Rivers governor was still trying to establish himself politically.
He accused Wike of turning against several political allies who supported his rise, citing former Rivers leaders and other prominent figures who once worked closely with him.
The party urged the FCT minister to focus on governing Abuja rather than engaging in what it described as “political gossip” targeted at Chief Bode George.
The latest exchange has further deepened the political rift between Wike and some PDP leaders, with both sides trading accusations over loyalty, credibility and past political relationships.
