The Nigeria Police Force has opened an internal investigation into Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Moshood Jimoh, following corruption allegations levelled against him by social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
The police have also summoned VeryDarkMan to appear before the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja and provide evidence to support the allegations.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
According to the Force, AIG Jimoh, who heads Zone 2 Command, Lagos, was invited for questioning by the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force CID as part of an internal administrative review.
The move came after weeks of explosive social media claims by VeryDarkMan against the senior police officer.
VDM’S BOMBSHELL CLAIMS
VeryDarkMan has, in a series of videos, accused Jimoh of wrongdoing over the handling of murder investigations carried out while the officer was Commissioner of Police in Lagos.
He alleged that police officers under Jimoh’s supervision framed businessman Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi in connection with the killings of Sheriff Ishola Salami in April 2023 and Demola, also known as Prince Ademola Akinloye, in August 2024.
The killings occurred in the Ajiran area of Eti-Osa, Lagos.
VeryDarkMan further alleged that two suspects arrested in January 2026 initially made statements admitting involvement in the Salami killing without implicating Akanbi.
He claimed that subsequent statements linking the businessman to the crime were obtained through pressure or torture.
The influencer repeatedly challenged AIG Jimoh to produce the original statements made by the suspects and called for an independent review of the evidence.
The allegations have now triggered an official response from the police authorities.
POLICE SUMMON VDM
While announcing the probe into Jimoh, the Force said VeryDarkMan had also been formally invited to substantiate his allegations.
The Force CID in Abuja issued the invitation to Otse on July 30, 2026, asking him to appear before investigators and provide evidence backing the claims he made publicly.
The police said the steps were part of its commitment to investigating credible allegations of misconduct, regardless of the rank of the officer involved or the public profile of the complainant.
It urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation and present his evidence to investigators.
COURT CASE SEPARATE
The Force, however, drew a line between the administrative investigation and the criminal case linked to the controversy.
It said the criminal matter had already been investigated and was before a court of competent jurisdiction following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The police stressed that the case was now sub judice and that its final determination rested with the judiciary.
It warned that the matter would not be tried on social media or through public campaigns.
The Force said it would not allow public pressure or commentary to influence the judicial process or prejudge the parties involved.
‘NO OFFICER IS ABOVE THE LAW’
The police said disciplinary matters within the Force are governed by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other established procedures.
It acknowledged Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and the right to demand accountability from public institutions.
However, it warned against using unsubstantiated allegations to force disciplinary action outside established procedures.
The Force said any officer found culpable after investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
It also warned that deliberately false allegations aimed at damaging the reputation of officers or the institution could attract legal consequences.
The police urged VeryDarkMan to submit his evidence and allow both the administrative investigation and the court proceedings to run their course.
The Force reiterated that no officer is above the law, but insisted that disciplinary action must be based on evidence and carried out through due process.
