President Bola Tinubu has approved a massive salary increase for Nigeria’s Armed Forces, with personnel set to receive between 30 and 80 per cent pay rises from September 1, 2026.
About 250,000 military personnel are expected to benefit from the new salary package approved by the President.
Under the new arrangement, officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30 per cent increase in their salaries.
The category covers Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals.
Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent salary increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the biggest boost of 80 per cent.
The salary increase will push the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.
The development comes as Nigerian troops continue to battle banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across several parts of the country.
Tinubu said the salary boost was part of his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of troops who risk their lives to protect Nigerians.
He said those defending the country deserved greater support and appreciation, adding that his government would continue to prioritise the welfare of military personnel.
The President also promised continued investment in weapons, technology and other equipment needed by the Armed Forces to confront security threats.
According to him, Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful development without adequate security.
Tinubu urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their sacrifices and service to the country.
He said his administration remained determined to deploy all available military and law enforcement resources to defeat terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements threatening the nation.
