A fresh graduate of Lagos State University is battling for his life after suspected armed robbers opened fire during an attack on a Point of Sale operator in the Igando area of Lagos State.
The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was reportedly caught in the line of fire when the four-man gang stormed Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area on Sunday.
The robbers, who reportedly arrived on two motorcycles, were said to have traced the PoS operator to the neighbourhood.
According to residents, the gang initially went to the woman’s shop, which was close to her residence, but discovered that she was not there.
They subsequently moved to her home and began calling out to her while attempting to force their way into the building.
However, the occupants quickly shut the entrance, preventing the robbers from gaining access.
Frustrated by their failed attempt, the gunmen allegedly resorted to shooting indiscriminately before fleeing the area.
A resident, Bode, said the attackers had become increasingly aggressive after failing to locate their target and enter the house.
Another resident, who owns a shop close to the scene, said the LASU graduate was walking along the street when one of the bullets struck him.
The resident explained that the victim apparently did not realise that an armed robbery was taking place until the gunmen began firing.
He said the young man was caught in the danger zone as he unknowingly walked towards the scene.
Residents reportedly rushed to his aid immediately after the robbers escaped and took him to a nearby General Hospital for treatment.
One of those who helped the victim reportedly disclosed that he had recently graduated from LASU and was preparing to begin the National Youth Service Corps programme.
The attack has reportedly heightened fear among residents of the area, while the identities and whereabouts of the fleeing suspects remain unknown.
