The Lagos State Government has sealed a church in Surulere over persistent late-night noise pollution allegedly disrupting residents’ sleep and disturbing the peace of the neighbourhood.

The affected church, The All Christians Gathering Ministry, located at No. 1, Ishola Street, off Clegg, Surulere, was shut down on Sunday following an investigation by environmental officials, which confirmed violations of state environmental regulations.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action, saying the church had been found to constitute a nuisance to residents.

Wahab disclosed that the government acted after receiving a complaint from an X user, DAVERY (@BigDavery), who reported repeated noise disturbances from the church.

According to the commissioner, the church would remain sealed until further notice.

He warned that the government would not tolerate environmental violations or activities that undermine the peace and well-being of residents, stressing that religious institutions, businesses and other establishments must comply with environmental regulations.

The action followed a desperate public appeal by the resident in the early hours of Saturday, when he complained that the church’s activities had again deprived him and other neighbours of sleep.

In a post accompanied by videos of the noise, the resident said it was already 1:31 a.m. and the disturbance had continued despite previous complaints.

He expressed fears about publicly disclosing the church’s address for security reasons but offered to provide details privately to the commissioner.

In earlier posts, DAVERY recounted previous confrontations with members of the church, alleging that one of them threatened that God would take his life.

He also raised concerns about the impact of the noise on other households, including a family with a child below one year old.

The complainant further lamented that residents were forced to shut their windows because of the noise, leaving them to endure the heat without electricity to power their fans.

The latest enforcement action is part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing crackdown on noise pollution through the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

Under the state’s environmental regulations, permissible noise levels in residential areas are 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night.

In recent months, LASEPA has sealed several churches, hotels, lounges and other business premises across Lagos over noise pollution, particularly where operators allegedly failed to comply with warnings, soundproofing requirements and other directives.
