Six members of the National Youth Service Corps assaulted and detained for allegedly being into internet fraud by Anambra State Vigilante Service, have dragged the state government to court.
The corps members — Jennifer Elohor, Greatness Oyeh, Eze Ikenna, Anighoro Godspower, Feyisara Amore, and Chimenum Wonodi were beaten black and blue by members of the state vigilante group on alleged grounds of being into internet fraud.
The video of the assault which went viral, contains scene of the moment one of them, a female, was stripped naked by the security officers.
In the suit filed before the Federal High Court in Awka, the plaintiffs are demanding N1bn in damages for assault and unlawful detention.
The plaintiffs listed the Anambra State Government, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the State Attorney-General, and the vigilante group as the first, second, third, and fourth respondents respectively.
They’re are asking the court to declare their arrest, detention, torture, and abuse as illegal, unlawful, unwarranted, unconstitutional, and an infringement of their fundamental rights.
They’re also seeking an order compelling the respondents to issue a written public apology to be published in at least two national newspapers and one local newspaper in Anambra State.
