Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said he is not under pressure to have a son to carry on his family name or business empire.
Dangote, 69, said his three daughters were already doing well and he did not believe having a male heir would necessarily improve his legacy.
The Dangote Group President made the disclosure during an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday, while responding to a question on whether he was making efforts to have a son.
He said, “That’s not really my priority. Let me say it bluntly. It is not really my priority. God controls everything.”
According to him, having a son does not automatically guarantee the preservation of a family’s name or legacy, noting that a male child could even become a source of trouble for the family.
Dangote added, “Sometimes you can pray to have a son but the son could be the one to drag the family name down.”
He said he was satisfied with the three daughters he already had, stressing that he did not think a son would have performed better than them.
“Sometimes when God does give you something, don’t push it. I don’t think a son would have done better than the three girls I have,” he said.
His daughters — Fatima, Halima and Mariya — occupy key executive and leadership roles within the Dangote Group.
