Tension has gripped Oka-Akoko in Ondo State following the arrest of a senior aide to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his wife over alleged possession of illicit drugs and a locally fabricated firearm.
The aide, identified as Hon. Ware Ojo, popularly known as “Aruwe, Authority 001,” was reportedly arrested by police operatives alongside his wife after substances suspected to be cocaine, methamphetamine, opium and other illicit drugs were allegedly discovered at their residence.
The seized substances were said to have an estimated street value of more than N30m.
A locally made firearm was also reportedly recovered from the residence during the police operation.
But the development allegedly took a dramatic turn after Ojo’s arrest, with claims that some of his supporters mobilised and attacked the police station in Oka-Akoko.
The alleged assault reportedly left two police personnel, identified as Sergeant Abiodun and Inspector Osha, injured.
The officers were subsequently said to have been rushed to Faith Hospital, Oka-Akoko, where they received medical attention.
In the course of the operation, the police also reportedly recovered a Lexus RX 350 SUV bearing the registration number AUTHORITY 01.
However, controversy reportedly followed the arrest after the Divisional Police Officer of Oka-Akoko Division, SP Makanjuola Damilola, allegedly received a telephone call from Governor Aiyedatiwa.
Sources surrounding the incident claimed that Ojo was subsequently released from police custody following the call.
The suspected drugs, firearm and other exhibits recovered during the operation, however, were reportedly retained by the police.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged release have now raised questions, particularly against the backdrop of the reported attack on the police station and the injuries allegedly sustained by the officers.
It was also unclear whether the governor’s alleged intervention was connected to the release or what instructions, if any, were given during the reported telephone conversation.
The police are expected to establish the ownership of the seized substances and firearm, determine the circumstances of their recovery and investigate the alleged attack on officers.
Ojo was recently appointed as an aide to Governor Aiyedatiwa.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Ondo State Police Command or the governor’s office confirming the full details of the incident or explaining the circumstances surrounding Ojo’s reported release.
