Senator Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has voluntarily submitted himself to security agencies for investigation over allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
Buba made the move on Monday while addressing journalists in Bauchi, declaring that he had nothing to hide and was ready to face any lawful investigation.
The senator said the allegations, which first emerged in 2024, were politically motivated and had persisted despite legal steps taken against those he accused of spreading them.
He said, “I have nothing to hide, and I have nothing to fear from any legitimate investigation.”
According to him, his legal team, led by former Nigerian Bar Association President, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), had written to the Department of State Services, Defence Intelligence Agency and Nigeria Police Force, requesting comprehensive investigations.
Buba said he had consequently presented himself to the DSS to answer questions on every allegation levelled against him.
He added that some suspects allegedly connected to the circulation of the claims were already facing prosecution before the Federal High Court.
The senator strongly denied sponsoring, financing, arming or facilitating banditry, terrorism, kidnapping or any criminal organisation.
He challenged anyone with evidence against him to take it to security agencies instead of spreading allegations online.
“Do not hide behind social media. Do not rely on edited videos, insinuations, propaganda or anonymous allegations. Take whatever evidence you have to the appropriate security agencies and allow the law to take its course,” he said.
Buba also pledged to cooperate with the DSS, police, military, DIA and other agencies investigating the matter.
He said he was equally prepared to face prosecution if investigators established a prima facie case against him.
“If a prima facie case is established against me based on credible and verifiable evidence, I am prepared to face prosecution. If a competent court eventually finds me guilty, I will accept the consequences prescribed by law,” he said.
The lawmaker said documents submitted to the security agencies included a September 2025 police petition, details of pending criminal proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja and a September 7, 2026 petition requesting INTERPOL intervention.
He said copies of the submission were also sent to the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Chief of Defence Staff and Minister of Defence.
Buba recalled his previous role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, saying the position brought him into close contact with security and intelligence agencies on matters involving banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.
He alleged that one Hassan Saleh Hussaini, whom his lawyers believed was connected to some of the allegations, was operating from Niger Republic.
According to him, the matter had been reported for INTERPOL intervention, while lawyers had also been engaged in Niger Republic.
The senator linked the controversy to his political ambition, noting that he had declared his intention to contest the 2027 Bauchi governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party.
He said political differences should not be allowed to degenerate into allegations of serious crimes.
“Politics must never become an excuse for destroying people’s reputations with allegations of terrorism and other grave crimes. Let us debate development. Let us debate education, healthcare, agriculture, security, jobs, infrastructure and the future of Bauchi State.”
Buba also appealed to his supporters not to retaliate against those making the allegations.
“To my supporters across Bauchi State and beyond, I appeal for calm. Do not insult anyone on my behalf. Do not threaten anyone. Do not engage in violence or retaliation. We must allow the law to work,” he said.
He insisted that he remained committed to peace, security and justice.
“My conscience is clear. I have nothing to hide. I have voluntarily submitted myself for investigation because the truth should not be afraid of scrutiny,” Buba said.
The latest controversy followed videos circulated by a content creator identified as ‘D English Alhaji’, who alleged that suspected bandit leaders had visited the senator’s residence.
The claims were further amplified after a resident identified as Hassan alleged, during an interview with the influencer, that Buba was among politicians aiding bandits in the area.
Hassan also alleged that persons linked to suspected bandit kingpin Dogo Gide were brought to Abuja for specialised training, allegedly with the assistance of one of the senator’s aides.
