The Nigerian Medical Association has declared strike in three hospitals over the death of a medical officer doing housemanship at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, Dr. Vwaere Diaso.
Diaso’s death came as a result of a faulty elevator in the hospital on Tuesday.
The deceased was in the elevator to collect food from a dispatch rider when it crash-landed and got killed.
The circumstance of her death excited protest from her colleagues on Wednesday, with reports rife that hospital authorities have been playing deaf and dumb to complaints about the faulty elevator.
The incident has led the NMA via a statement by the state Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, and Secretary, Ismail Ajibowo, to direct all doctors working in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to commence an indefinite strike.
“We direct all our doctors in the three government hospitals on the island to commence indefinite strike action until the investigations are completed and justice is served; we immediately direct our doctors in all the other government hospitals to scale down activities as a mark of respect for our dead colleague. Only emergency services should be rendered for the next five days,” the statement read in part.
