Dr. Bashir Kurfi, the public affairs commentator who accused Katsina State Government of sponsoring bandit leaders to Hajj has been remanded.

The remand of Dr. Bashir Kurfi was ordered by Chief Magistrates Zaharaddeen Kofar Soro after the Katsina State Police Command arraigned him over alleged defamation of character and injurious falsehood based on the allegations of sponsoring bandits to Mecca he made against Katsina State Government.

Dr Kurfi who is equally a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is charged with two counts under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State.

The prosecution described his statement as false, malicious and capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the state government and the people of Katsina.

At his arraignment on Thursday, he pleaded not guilty to the charges when read to him.

After oral arguments between the two opposing lawyers, the magistrate granted the prayer of the prosecution.

He directed that the police should continue with their investigation and ordered that the remand of the defendant in police custody pending the adjourned date.

The matter was adjourned to Monday, July 14, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
