The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken an alleged fake-letter scandal to court, arraigning a supporter of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over a document purportedly written by President Bola Tinubu to the United States President.

The suspect, Mubarak Abdullahi, popularly known as Sardaunan Samari, was arrested on September 28 after allegedly sharing the document on his Facebook page with the provocative caption, “ATIKU IS COMING.”

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga disclosed the development in a statement on Monday, saying Abdullahi admitted during investigations that he shared the document and apologised for his action.

However, the apology did not prevent the DSS from pursuing the case.

Abdullahi was first brought before Chief Magistrate Court No. 10, Kabala Doki, Kaduna, which ordered his remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna.

The secret police has also filed a three-count charge bordering on alleged cybercrime and defamation against him at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. A date for his formal arraignment before the Federal High Court has yet to be announced.

Onanuga said the case demonstrated the DSS’s ability to track people suspected of circulating misleading information online.

The controversy comes amid growing political tension and concerns over the circulation of fabricated documents and other potentially misleading content on social media ahead of the 2027 general election.

The allegations against Abdullahi are yet to be determined by the Federal High Court, and he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
