Ohanaeze Ndigbo has hit out at the federal government over the ordeal of former three-term Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife and a medical doctor.

Ekweremadu on Friday was sentenced to nine years and eight months imprisonment with his wife, Beatrice, jailed for four years and six months and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, bagging ten years for organ trafficking plot in a crude effort to get kidney donor for the couple’s daughter, Sonia.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo in reaction to the judgement through its spokesperson, Chief Alex Ogbonnia said the troubled ex-Deputy Senate President deserved federal government’s support during the trial but instead the government was equally persecuting him.

Chief Ogbonnia remarked this in an interview with Punchng saying, “They(federal government) did not treat him like someone who has served meritoriously in this country. Rather, while he was facing the travails, the Federal Government came out with charges and allegations of corruption and seized his properties.

“This is a man who has been around you, walked with you for years and when he needed your help, there were busy talking about auctioning his properties. All those things indicated that it was not only the UK court that was after him, but the FG was also after him.”
