Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has countered former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha over Al-Mustapha’s claim that his account that Abacha died on top of a pharmacist is false.
Amachree, author of DSS@40, in the book alleged that the late dictator died during a consensual sex with a pharmacist, saying the incident that happened while he was in service fell on him to interrogate the lady in question.
His account was however dismissed by Abacha’s CSO, Al-Mustapha who had previously said that his boss died of poisoned handshake after shaking hands with a security operative who accompanied a visiting foreign dignitary in 1998.
This time again, Al-Mustapha stated that he has the CCTV footage of the late military ruler’s final hours.
Reacting to Al-Mustapha’s dismissal of his account of the circumstances surrounding Abacha’s death, Amachree described Al-Mustapha as “a boy,” adding: “I was seven years old when Nigeria gained independence.
“I retired as an Assistant Director, which is equivalent to the rank of Brigadier in the army, while Al-Mustapha retired as a Major.”
He said this in a telephone interview with The Nation where he also urged Al-Mustapha to produce CCTV footage of the late military ruler’s final hours if he disputes the account contained in his memoir.
Amachree added that his book underwent official vetting by the DSS before publication and received the agency’s endorsement as part of activities commemorating its 40th anniversary.
