Family Rejects Old Naira Notes As Bride Price In Niger – Report

A bride’s family has reportedly turned down a bride price paid with the old naira notes as the Central Bank, CBN’s January 31 deadline for it to cease to be a medium of exchange draws near.

The family of a young woman in the frame to get married refused to collect old N1,000 and N500 notes her suitor’s family paid in bride price.

As per Daily Trust that related the incident, it happened in Gbako LGA of Niger State.

The publication, said the bride’s family instead demanded for the new notes.

Quoting a member of the groom’s family privy to the issue, the paper wrote: “We took money to the family of the girl we want to marry. They called me on Sunday to come and take the old currency notes back pending when we have the new naira notes. They said they don’t have anywhere to change the old notes. So, I want to take it to the gym the old notes for fear that they would not be able to spend them before the January 31, deadline.”

The new notes have been low in circulation, a circumstance the CBN blamed on commercial banks, alleging them of refusing to come for it at the apex bank.

The bankers’ bank went on to slam N1m fine daily on any bank that failed to comply, while urging bank customers to refuse the old notes.
