A Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer, identified as Joseph Ali, has died in a shocking firearm accident after a locally made rifle he was handling suddenly discharged and hit him in the eye at his Abuja residence.
The tragic incident happened around 7:30 a.m. at Compensation Layout, Old Kutunku, Abuja, as Ali was preparing to leave for work.
Reports said a distress call was made from the area after the accidental shooting involving the immigration officer.
Ali, who had reportedly dressed and was ready to report for duty, was said to have picked up the locally fabricated rifle used for community security, intending to hide it before heading out.
Unknown to him, the weapon was reportedly still cocked.
In a moment of horror, the rifle allegedly went off while he was handling it, with pellets striking his left eye.
The incident, sources said, happened in the presence of his wife and children, leaving the family traumatised.
Ali was immediately rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), where a doctor on duty examined him and confirmed him dead.
His remains were later deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
The matter has been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCB) for a full probe into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations continue.
