The Federal Government has announced a nationwide public holiday on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to allow Muslims celebrate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government in a statement released on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo extended greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, urging citizens to reflect on the virtues of compassion, humility and selfless service that characterised the life of Prophet Muhammad.

According to the minister, the annual celebration offers an opportunity for Nigerians to draw lessons from the Prophet’s teachings and apply them in their daily lives.

He called on Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace, unity and stronger national bonds, stressing that maintaining harmony in the country remained a shared responsibility.

The minister also urged Muslim faithful and other Nigerians to mark the occasion responsibly, with respect for one another, while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and memorable Eid celebration.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, as well as promoting peace and stability across the country.
