The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, has threatened to revoke the licences of petrol stations caught under-dispensing fuel to customers.
The regulator raised the alarm over cases of motorists allegedly receiving less petroleum product than the quantity paid for at retail outlets across the country.
NMDPRA described the practice as a serious breach of consumer trust and warned that operators found deliberately or repeatedly compromising the accuracy of their pumps could face severe sanctions.
The authority has now ordered all filling station operators to immediately calibrate and verify their fuel dispensers and totalisers.
According to NMDPRA, the exercise is aimed at ensuring that customers get the exact quantity of fuel they pay for.
The regulator said it had also stepped up inspections and enforcement operations nationwide, with outlets found to be under-dispensing or using improperly calibrated equipment expected to take immediate corrective action.
NMDPRA warned that persistent or serious violations could lead to sanctions ranging from other regulatory measures to outright revocation of the affected station’s licence.
The authority also directed major petroleum marketers’ associations, including MEMAN, DAPPMAN, IPMAN and PETROAN, to immediately alert their members and ensure compliance with the directive.
The latest warning comes amid heightened sensitivity over petrol prices and pump transactions, with the regulator saying its priority is to protect consumers, promote transparency and ensure integrity in petroleum product sales.
