FirstBank Nigeria is set to bring business leaders, academics and policymakers together as it launches a major public lecture focused on ethics, governance and the future of the Nigerian economy.
The inaugural public lecture of the FirstBank Samuel Asabia Professorial Chair in Business Ethics and Governance will hold at the University of Lagos on September 3, 2026.
The lecture, themed “Business Ethics and the Future of Nigeria’s Economy,” is expected to spark fresh debate on how integrity, accountability, responsible leadership and sustainable business practices can help strengthen Nigeria’s economy.
Academics, students, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, policymakers and other stakeholders are expected to attend the event.
The Samuel Asabia Professorial Chair was established in honour of Samuel Asabia, FirstBank’s first indigenous Managing Director, and has become a platform for research, teaching and public discourse on business ethics, corporate governance and responsible leadership.
FirstBank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun Alebiosu, will chair the inaugural lecture.
Alebiosu said the bank believes Nigeria’s economic progress cannot be sustained without ethical leadership, sound governance and responsible business practices.
He said the lecture would provide an opportunity for experts and stakeholders to examine how integrity-based leadership could strengthen institutions, build economic resilience and contribute to a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
According to him, FirstBank’s support for the initiative reflects its commitment to knowledge-sharing and nation-building beyond conventional banking activities.
The bank also stressed that sustainable development should not be measured solely by financial gains, but should include responsible corporate citizenship, ethical decision-making, effective governance and the development of future leaders.
The Professorial Chair is currently held by Professor Kenneth Amaeshi, an internationally recognised scholar whose areas of expertise include sustainable finance, corporate governance, business ethics and economic development.
FirstBank said its continued investment in education, research and intellectual platforms such as the Samuel Asabia Chair is part of its broader effort to promote ideas and leadership principles capable of shaping a more ethical, sustainable and prosperous Nigeria.
