One year, four months after her husband a Globacom manager, Olaoluwa Adetona, vanished while on official duty in Imo State, Funmi Adetona is still searching for answers — and refuses to believe he is dead without proof.
The distraught wife has cried out for help, demanding that the telecom giant and security agencies unravel the mystery surrounding her husband’s disappearance.
Olaoluwa, 49, a roll-out manager with Globacom, reportedly disappeared on May 6, 2025, while on a site acquisition assignment in Imo State with two expatriates who had travelled from Lagos.
Since then, his 46-year-old wife, Funmi, said the family has been trapped in painful uncertainty, with no confirmed information about his whereabouts or fate.
According to her, her worst fears began that night when she called her husband around 9pm, only for an unidentified person to answer his phone.
She said the man initially claimed he would give the phone to Olaoluwa when he saw him but allegedly became abusive when she called again and insisted on speaking with her husband.
Funmi said she later contacted her husband’s housemaid in Imo, who also disclosed that she had been unable to reach him.
It was subsequently revealed to the family that Olaoluwa had allegedly been kidnapped.
The situation became even more puzzling when Funmi was informed that the two expatriates who were reportedly with her husband had been released, while Olaoluwa remained missing.
She also alleged that someone in possession of her husband’s phone demanded N1 million before allowing her to speak with him.
Funmi said she alerted some of Olaoluwa’s colleagues but was advised not to contact the number again because the company was reportedly handling the matter.
She later said the family was informed that ransom had been paid and that Olaoluwa would soon be released.
But the promised homecoming never happened.
Funmi said the family was repeatedly told that her husband would be brought back, with the assurances stretching from Wednesday to Thursday and Friday.
With no clear answers forthcoming, Funmi travelled to Lagos to meet Globacom officials, including the Head of the Roll-out Department and the Chief Security Officer, in a desperate bid to establish what had happened.
She alleged that the family was initially told that the company was unaware of the incident before officials later acknowledged knowledge of it.
The family also travelled to Imo State and approached the police.
According to Funmi, the police said a meeting involving Globacom officials was necessary to confront some of the issues surrounding the case.
But despite repeated visits, inquiries and assurances, the family, she said, was still no closer to finding Olaoluwa.
Her frustration boiled over as she questioned what had been achieved after months of claims that the matter was being worked on.
The prolonged disappearance has also taken a heavy emotional toll on Olaoluwa’s three children.
Funmi said the children continue to ask about their father, forcing her to keep telling them that he travelled and would soon return.
But more than a year later, she said she no longer knows what to tell them.
Before his disappearance, Olaoluwa reportedly returned home every fortnight to see his family. His prolonged absence has now become a painful reality for his children.
The tragedy has also hit his parents hard.
Funmi disclosed that Olaoluwa’s father died on April 6, 2026, after reportedly becoming emotionally distressed over the disappearance of his son.
The family recently buried him, while Olaoluwa’s mother has reportedly become seriously ill and now requires assistance to walk.
Adding to the family’s anguish is the mystery surrounding Olaoluwa’s vehicle.
Funmi said the family was told that the vehicle had been recovered after allegedly coming under gunfire.
However, she said there was no evidence shown to the family proving that Olaoluwa had been shot or killed.
For Funmi, the question is simple: if her husband is dead, where is the proof?
She insisted that the absence of blood or other evidence in the vehicle made it impossible for her to accept suggestions that he had been killed.
The grieving wife stressed that she was not accusing Globacom or any individual of wrongdoing, but simply wanted the truth about what happened to her husband.
She called on the company, police and other security agencies to intensify efforts to locate Olaoluwa and give the family credible answers.
“They should produce my husband,” she pleaded.
The family has now engaged a lawyer, who Funmi said had written about four letters to Globacom demanding clarification and action.
She also disclosed that Globacom continued paying Olaoluwa’s salary into her account in September 2025, despite his disappearance.
That development, she said, has further raised questions for the family about the company’s knowledge of his status.
Funmi urged Globacom to do more to find her husband, particularly given that the expatriates who were reportedly with him were released.
For more than a year, the Adetona family has been left waiting, hoping and asking the same agonising question: Where is Olaoluwa?
The family is now demanding renewed efforts to establish his whereabouts — and, above all, the truth about his fate.
