Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are in for another traffic headache as the Federal Government begins a two-week repair of the Kara–Berger Bridge from Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The intervention involves the replacement of deteriorating expansion joints on the busy bridge section and is expected to last until Tuesday, September 22.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) announced the planned works in a traffic advisory signed by its spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, on Sunday.
According to Akinbiyi, the project followed a directive from the Minister of Works and is being carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, the contractor and other relevant agencies.
He said the repairs were necessary to improve safety, protect the bridge’s structural integrity and ensure smoother traffic movement along the heavily used corridor.
But motorists may have to brace for lane restrictions, slow movement and possible gridlock, especially during peak periods.
Akinbiyi said traffic management measures would be put in place to create a safe working environment for the contractor while limiting disruption to road users.
TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the police are expected to be deployed around the affected section to control traffic and maintain order.
The agency urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead and make allowances for longer travel times during the repair period.
Drivers were also warned to obey temporary road signs, markings and instructions from traffic officials, while slowing down around the construction zone.
Akinbiyi specifically cautioned motorists against stopping unnecessarily or picking up passengers within the restricted area, driving against traffic and using unauthorised diversions.
He appealed for patience and cooperation, saying the restrictions were necessary to ensure the work is completed safely and on schedule.
TRACE, he added, would continue working with the Ministry of Works, the contractor and other agencies to “minimise traffic disruption” throughout the project.
Motorists have therefore been advised to leave home earlier, avoid unnecessary stops and comply with traffic regulations as the repair work gets underway.
The agency expressed regret over the inconvenience the project may cause, stressing that the temporary disruption is aimed at making the busy bridge safer for road users.
