The deceased and his alleged killer tied the nuptial knot a few months ago at a court registry in Bayelsa.

And few months into their wedding, precisely, August 16, 2017, 40-year-old Akpata, who hails from Delta State and popularly called Bishop because he reportedly pastored a church, allegedly murdered his 33-year-old wife.

It was said that a fight ensued between them at their residence located behind Fido Water Company in Kpansia area of Yenagoa following a text message sent to Akpata’s phone, which his deceased spouse believed was from his mistress.

During the fight, he allegedly strangled his new wife with the cords of a pressing iron before stabbing her to death with a knife.

The suspect reportedly fled to Ghana after the murder, but returned to Badagry, Lagos State, a few days after where he was arrested on September 1, and brought to Bayelsa the same day.

It was further gathered that the alleged wife killer spent over 27 years in Australia, and also spent time behind the bar at various times in the country.

“He has been staying in Australia for a very long time. He claimed to be a Bishop; he mentioned some few churches. We also knew that he was involved in a case that had to do with murder, either as a witness or a suspect.

“We have also seen pictures of him in and out of prisons in Australia. They show that he must have jumped bail because of certain criminal matters in Australia,” the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, Mr. Asuquo Amba, said while Akpata was being paraded at the State Command on Thursday.
