The House of Representatives has ordered probe into mistreatment of Nigerian Hajj pilgrims to Saudi Arabia this year.
95,000 Nigerians went for Hajj pilgrimage this year, about 14 of whom died, with report rife that the pilgrims were subjected to bad treatment.
Honourable Ahmed Idris on Thursday at the plenary under the motion, titled: “Need to Investigate the Untold Hardship Faced by Nigerian Pilgrims at the Recently Concluded 2023 Hajj,” said, the situation was so bad that several public officials who had no tent and were made to sleep in unhealthy places and conditions.
Idris added that the agency responsible for pilgrims’ welfare shirked their role in many regards.
After adopting the motion, the House mandated the Committee on Pilgrims Affairs, when constituted, to conduct the investigation and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
It also mandated the Committee on Legislative Compliance, when constituted, to ensure implementation.
