A fresh graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, Mathias Elisha, has reportedly lost an arm after a violent encounter with suspected Fulani herdsmen over alleged destruction of his family’s beans farm.

The shocking incident reportedly occurred on Friday when Elisha was alerted that herders and their cattle had invaded the family’s farm and were feeding on their beans crop.

Determined to protect their farm from further destruction, Elisha reportedly rushed to the farmland alongside his father to confront the herders and drive the cattle away.

However, what was expected to be a routine attempt to protect their livelihood allegedly turned into a bloody confrontation, leaving the young graduate with a severed arm.

The attack has left the young man facing a devastating setback barely after completing his tertiary education, raising concerns about the safety of farmers and the recurring clashes between crop farmers and livestock owners.

The incident is another grim reminder of the lingering farmers-herders conflict, in which disputes over cattle straying into farmlands and destroying crops have repeatedly escalated into violence.

Details of the community where the incident occurred, the condition of Elisha’s father, his current medical condition and whether the police have arrested any suspects were not immediately available.
