Nigerian TikTok sensation Elizabeth Amadou, popularly known as Jarvis, has opened up about the painful realities of her childhood, revealing how hunger, poverty, an absent father and her mother’s mental health struggles shaped her early years.
Jarvis made the emotional disclosure while speaking alongside her husband, Peller, and Spark Nation founder, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, during a Sunday service in the United Kingdom.
The popular content creator said growing up with her mother was particularly difficult because of what she described as her mother’s bipolar disorder.
According to Jarvis, her mother’s behaviour could change suddenly, leaving her and other members of the family struggling to cope.
She recalled that her mother could be loving and calm at one moment but become violent or verbally abusive at another.
Jarvis said the experience made her childhood stressful and depressing.
‘I DIDN’T GROW UP WITH MY FATHER’
Adding to her childhood struggles, Jarvis revealed that she grew up without her father.
She explained that her mother had travelled out of the country and returned pregnant before giving birth to her.
Jarvis said the absence of a father figure made her upbringing even more difficult, particularly because of the challenges she was already facing at home.
She, however, credited her grandparents with playing a major role in raising her.
According to her, her grandmother and grandfather provided the discipline and guidance she needed while growing up, describing them as educated but very strict.
Jarvis said their strict upbringing eventually helped shape her character.
‘WE CRIED AND SLEPT HUNGRY’
Beyond her family challenges, Jarvis said poverty was another major part of her childhood.
She revealed that there were periods when her family struggled to pay her school fees and, at times, could not afford enough food.
The TikTok star said she was determined to remain in school despite the financial difficulties and did not want to fall into bad company or resort to questionable means of making money.
But the hunger, she revealed, sometimes became unbearable.
Jarvis recalled how she and her sister would watch cooking videos on TikTok despite being unable to afford the meals being displayed.
She said the sisters would watch the videos, salivate over the food, pray for divine help, cry and eventually go to sleep hungry.
HOW TIKTOK CHANGED EVERYTHING
Ironically, TikTok — the platform where the sisters once watched food videos they could not afford — would later become their source of income.
Jarvis said someone eventually contacted her on the platform and told her that she could make money through livestreaming.
Although she was initially shy and afraid that members of her family would discover what she was doing online, she eventually began livestreaming with her sister.
Their first earnings were reportedly just $5, but Jarvis said the small amount brought them great happiness because of the circumstances they were coming from.
The sisters continued creating content and gradually built an audience.
What started as an attempt to survive eventually developed into a full-fledged content creation career for Jarvis.
She said her motivation was largely driven by her desire to take care of her sister and become financially independent.
FROM STRUGGLE TO SPOTLIGHT
Jarvis’ story has since taken her from the difficult circumstances she described to the centre of Nigeria’s fast-growing social-media entertainment scene.
Her relationship with fellow TikToker Peller also became part of her journey, with the pair eventually getting married after initially meeting through TikTok interactions.
Today, Jarvis is known for her large social-media following and online content, but her latest revelation has offered fans a glimpse into the difficult experiences she says preceded her rise to fame.
From going to bed hungry and growing up without her father to earning her first few dollars through TikTok, Jarvis’ story is one of hardship, determination and an unexpected breakthrough on social media.
