A 22-year-old man’s complaint that he contracted HIV after alleged homosexual encounters has led to the arrest of eight people by the Jigawa State Hisbah Board.
The arrests were made in Kazaure Local Government Area after the young man reportedly approached the Hisbah authorities in the Kanti area of Kazaure town and accused nine individuals of having homosexual relations with him on different occasions.
The complainant reportedly told the authorities that he later tested positive for HIV, which he attributed to the alleged encounters.
Seeking justice, the man reportedly asked Hisbah officials to intervene, alleging that he had been deceived and that the encounters had negatively affected his life.
His complaint triggered an investigation and a search for the nine people he named.
Eight of them have now been arrested, while Hisbah operatives are still searching for the ninth suspect.
The Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Hisbah Board, Dauda Hadejia, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Dutse, the state capital.
Hadejia said the arrested suspects were subjected to preliminary questioning and reportedly admitted to engaging in the alleged acts with the complainant.
He said the board had gathered relevant information and evidence and would present them before the court after concluding its investigation.
The Hisbah spokesman stressed that the investigation was still ongoing and that efforts were being made to apprehend the remaining suspect.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commander-General of the board, Dr Hussain Baban, urged parents to pay greater attention to the upbringing of their children and monitor the people they associate with.
He also called on members of the public to be conscious of the consequences of their actions.
The eight suspects are expected to be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.
