Former footballer John Fashanu two weeks back was arrested in Abuja over alleged obtaining money by false pretence.

Fashanu was arrested in his house at Sun City in FCT precisely on Monday, July 17, following allegation that he conspired to dupe a friend of N9.5m.

The ex-footballer according to report, conspired with two men, who are at large as the time of this publication to dupe a friend of his the sum.

The victim, who lodged complaint with the police, was approached by Fashanu to buy a land, which the former footballer claimed was put up for sale.

It however, turned out that it was a scam as the land was not for sale after the complainant had paid N9,550,000 to the dupe.

Consequently, Fashanu, who brokered the dirty deal was arrested and spent two days in detention.
The 54-year-old was released after he promised to pay the money back while the police were hunting for his accomplices.

‘John Fashanu was arrested on July 17 in connection with an allegation of criminal conspiracy and obtaining the sum of N9,550,000 under false pretence.

‘He was granted administrative bail on July 18 but because of his inability to produce the requisite surety on that day, he remained in detention until July 19 when he was released,’ Deputy Inspector General Hyacinth Dagala said about Fashanu’s arrest.
