The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said that 20 chairmanship aspirants in Kano State have tested positive for multiple drugs during screening for the upcoming local government elections.
NDLEA’s Commander in the state, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, made this known.
Ahmad said the aspirants include those presented by the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.
He added that the aspirants tested positive for substances from opioids, hemp benzodiazepines and nicotine.
Speaking further, Ahmad noted that no female aspirant had tested positive so far, adding the screening process was ongoing and that more candidates were expected to be tested before the final verification by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
Recall that KANSIEC had scheduled the elections for October 26, 2024, where 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions will be contested.
