The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has announced the suspension of three doctors over the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, who died after doctors left surgical scissors in her body at Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano.
The deceased’s widower, Abubakar Muhammad, had accused Abubakar Imam Urology Centre of complicit in her death.
Muhammad claimed that in October last year she went through surgery in the hospital, after which she was having serious stomach pains.
He said months after it was discovered through scan that the surgeon(s) who performed the surgery left surgical scissors in her stomach and efforts to remove the object were being made, her wife died on Monday.
The narrative sparked public outrage and drew the reaction the Kano authorities through the State Hospitals Management Board.
The latter in a statement its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman released said preliminary investigation into the matter ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were left inside the patient’s body after a procedure.
The government in the communication declared that Aishatu Umar’s death was caused by medical negligence, and announced the immediate suspension of three personnel directly involved in the case from clinical duties.
It also referred the matter to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary measures in line with professional standards and the law.
