A Lagos hairstylist identified simply as Elvis has been killed after suspected armed robbers opened fire on him around Alesh Market in Ajah, Lagos State.
The incident reportedly happened on Saturday evening when the suspected robbers descended on people around the market and allegedly dispossessed several victims of their valuables.
Elvis, who was said to be returning from work, reportedly resisted the attackers.
His decision to fight back allegedly ended in tragedy after the robbers shot him in the head and fled the area.
A police source confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying a report was received that Elvis was attacked while returning from his workplace.
According to the source, the victim resisted the robbers before he was shot.
The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing and making efforts to identify and arrest the suspects.
The attackers were also said to have robbed other passersby during the incident.
A Facebook post by the Naija Confra page also drew attention to the killing, reporting that a man named Elvis was shot around Alesh Market in Ajah on Saturday evening.
The post described the incident as occurring around 7pm and said the victim was killed during the robbery attack.
The social-media account, however, did not provide Elvis’ surname or other details that could independently establish his full identity.
The killing has sparked fresh concerns among residents over security in the Ajah area, with residents calling for stronger police presence around the market, particularly at night.
A resident who spoke anonymously said cases of robbery and harassment had become increasingly common in the area and urged the authorities to step up patrols to prevent further attacks.
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the killing.
Its spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said no suspect had been arrested as of Tuesday and that investigation was ongoing.
