Panic has gripped some students of Lagos State University (LASU) following allegations that missing academic results could force hundreds of undergraduates to spend extra time in school.
The university management has launched an investigation into claims that some lecturers failed to upload students’ results, leaving affected students facing delayed graduation and, in some cases, the prospect of an additional academic year.
The controversy erupted on social media after allegations surfaced that more than 100 students were reportedly left out of the university’s most recent convocation because some of their results had allegedly remained unuploaded since their 300-level.
Some of the affected students are said to have completed their studies but may now have to remain in the university longer—not because they failed their courses, but allegedly because their results were not properly captured in the system.
The issue gained further attention after an X user, @TheAjakeManger, claimed that the problem was much bigger than the initial reports suggested.
The user alleged that the situation had affected students across different levels and accused a Head of Department of allegedly threatening some students who complained about the matter.
The post also claimed that some current 400-level students were facing similar difficulties.
“Dear @jidesanwoolu, they are now threatening the students and it’s not just this set that are affected. The current 400l are also facing the same setback,” the user alleged.
In another claim, the X user alleged that more than 1,000 students across the 200, 300 and 400 levels in the department were experiencing related academic problems.
The allegations sparked concern among students and attracted the attention of the university authorities.
Responding to the uproar, LASU management, through its official X account on Saturday, confirmed that it had received the complaint and was already looking into it.
The university said: “The attention of the University Management has been drawn to this allegation, and the matter is currently being looked into. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.”
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has stepped into the matter.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed on Saturday that the student body, alongside the Joint Campus Committee, Lagos Axis, had begun discussions with LASU management over the controversy.
Babatunde appealed to students affected by the alleged missing results to remain calm, saying the university management had given student leaders assurances that the matter would be resolved next week.
He warned students against taking actions that could worsen the situation.
“To all @LASUOfficial students that are affected with this, please remain calm as discussions have been opened with the management by the leadership of NANS and JCC LAGOS AXIS,” he said.
According to him, management had assured the student representatives that steps would be taken to resolve the issue next week.
The development has nevertheless raised fresh questions over the handling of students’ academic records and the potential consequences for undergraduates whose graduation could be delayed by administrative or result-uploading issues.
