The death of defence lawyer MB Isa has stalled the trial of Aliyu Mohammed, a suspect accused of selling walkie-talkies and batteries to bandits.
Isa reportedly died last Monday at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, leaving Mohammed without legal representation in the case before Justice SM Shuaibu.
Mohammed was arrested in Katsina by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and brought to Kano to face trial over the alleged supply of communication gadgets to bandits.
At the resumed proceedings, the court was informed of the lawyer’s death, which prevented the trial from continuing.
The defendant subsequently told the court that the business belonged to his uncle, whom he claimed sold the gadgets to vigilante groups in Katsina.
His account, however, differed from the confessional statement he reportedly made to the DSS.
Justice Shuaibu observed the discrepancy between the defendant’s statement to the security agency and his account in court, but said proceedings could not continue until he secured another lawyer to defend him.
The judge adjourned the case to allow Mohammed to obtain new legal representation.
