Twenty-four persons have been arraigned for the killing of a female Islamic teacher, Malama Ummulkhair, over allegation of child theft.
Malama Ummulkhair was on Sunday in Kaduna State mobbed to death over false accusation of attempting to steal some children playing.
She became an object of mob attack after she lost her way while going for an Islamic lecture and asked the children for directions but they in turn accused her of attempting to steal them prompting irate mob to descend on her and set her ablaze despite police efforts to rescue her.
Twenty-four persons believed to have hands in the gruesome murder were on Tuesday brought before a Magistrate Court sitting at Nigeria Defence Academy Junction, Kaduna.
The suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, destruction of public and police property, and culpable homicide, according to Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mansir Hassan.
Hassan in the statement said the court adjourned the matter until July 21, 2026, for further hearing and ordered that all the suspects be remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.
He added that more than 100 additional suspects were still under investigation for their alleged roles in the attack.
“Over 100 additional suspects remain under investigation for their alleged roles in the incident. Those found culpable will also be arraigned in court,” he stated.
