A fresh controversy has erupted in Ankpa, Kogi State, following reports that a young man was killed over an allegation of theft, raising renewed concerns about suspected extrajudicial killings in the community.
The incident was highlighted in a report published on Thursday, October 15, by Kogi Reports, which described the victim as a young boy allegedly killed over cable theft.
Although the initial information circulating about the incident refers to phone theft, the available report identifies cable theft as the alleged offence.
The precise circumstances surrounding the death, including the victim’s identity, the location of the incident and the individuals involved, remain unclear.
The development has renewed questions about the activities of vigilante groups in Ankpa and the need for security operatives to hand criminal suspects over to the police rather than subjecting them to unlawful punishment.
In a commentary published alongside its report, writer Idris Rufai called for an investigation into the young victim’s death, insisting that allegations of theft should not be used to justify the taking of human life.
He urged the Kogi State Government, police and relevant authorities to establish what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.
The controversy comes against the background of previous reports raising concerns about alleged unlawful killings linked to vigilante operations in Ankpa.
In a September 2022 article, Kogi Reports described allegations that a local security outfit known as Atakpo had subjected residents to violence over suspicions of theft, including cases involving recharge cards.
