Late Mercy, a first year student of Microbiology reportedly committed suicide by consuming rat poison mixed with battery water at her off-campus residence in Sabo area of Ile-Ife following her poor academic performance culminating in poor grade, and scoring ‘E’ in CHM101, a course reportedly dreaded by year one students in the science and technology related faculties.

But her bereaved parents have cast doubt on claims the deceased, who was sixteen-year-old when she passed on killed herself.

Rather they posited that Mercy was murdered, saying she couldn’t have committed suicide as she was a born again Christian.

The family of the deceased also faulted report that she drank rat poison, and wrote a suicide note explaining that the note that was found with her was the paper she planned to deliver at a seminar in Ado-Ekiti.

Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Afolaranmi told Punch, “My daughter was a child of God. She became born again at a tender age. How can she kill herself? She died atop the note she made for the lecture she was to deliver in Ado Ekiti.

“People thought it was a suicide note and they gave it to the police as evidence of her suicide. But when we got to the station and the Divisional Police Officer opened it, we all saw that it was the note she made for the lecture. They did not allow my daughter to fulfil her mission in life. They cut short her life.

“She didn’t kill herself; she was murdered. She made soap on Monday, which is still in her room. She was going to sell the soap. If she wanted to die, she could have used the soap chemicals.”
