Ebonyi State Police Command have taken a firm grip on a woman who allegedly killed her newborn baby girl on the same day she gave birth to her.
The suspect, Ugochukwu Otu(pictured) was said to have murdered her newborn baby on December 22, 2014 in Enohia Nkalu Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi State after she was discharged from a maternity home where she had gone to put to bed.
Police sources said the 25-year-old killed the tot, hid her remains in a black polythene bag and dumped it at a bush near Ndibe beach road in her area.
Ugo appeared to have covered her tracks until her neighbours who had insisted on knowing the whereabouts of the newborn reported her to the police. It was at the State Criminal Investigation Department that she confessed that she killed her baby.
Explaining her reason for her action, Ugo said she had no money to take care of the baby and the man who impregnated her denied responsibility.
She said, “I killed my one-day old baby girl intentionally because I don’t have N500 for her medical treatment. I want to be free lady. I didn’t have any intention to get pregnant. I was impregnated by one man called Monday, a native of Ozizza Afikpo North LGA.
“But later he refused to accept the pregnancy and I didn’t plan for it. I am not ready to marry; I want to be a free lady. I had to strangle the baby girl and put the corpse in a black poly¬thene bag and dumped it along Ndibe beach road, near the bush. I don’t regret killing my baby because nobody was responsible for her upkeep.”
