Digital financial services provider, OPay, has explained how Nigerians can check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s monthly N50,000 cash relief, warning customers against fraudsters seeking to exploit the intervention.

The company said eligible customers would receive a pop-up notification on the homepage of their OPay mobile application, directing them to follow the necessary steps to access the support.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, OPay clarified that customers who could not find the notification on their app were not eligible for the programme.

It stressed that it had no role in determining beneficiaries, directing those with complaints or enquiries to contact the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) through its official helpline.

OPay also raised the alarm over possible fraud, warning customers never to disclose their personal identification numbers (PINs) or one-time passwords (OTPs) to anyone claiming to facilitate the payment.

The fintech company cautioned beneficiaries against paying agents or clicking on suspicious links, insisting that the relief payment did not require such transactions.

It advised customers to check their eligibility only through its official mobile application or the USSD code 95520#.

The clarification comes amid growing public interest in the Federal Government’s N50,000 monthly cash support scheme, following the commencement of disbursement under NERSI.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of the intervention in a statement on October 30, describing it as a presidential initiative designed to provide immediate financial assistance to vulnerable Nigerians.

Under the programme, qualified beneficiaries are expected to receive N50,000 monthly to help meet essential needs and cushion the impact of rising living costs.

Doro explained that the ministry was working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure that payments were made securely and transparently.

Beneficiaries are expected to receive an SMS requesting their consent before the money is transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

Other participating platforms and their designated USSD codes include ALAT by Wema (94523#), MoMo PSB (*6710#), NairaGram (*72600#) and Moniepoint (557327#).

The minister warned Nigerians that the programme required no application, registration fee or payment to agents, urging the public to be wary of individuals demanding money or sensitive banking information.

He also advised Nigerians to avoid sharing their Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), PINs and other confidential details with strangers.

Those seeking clarification about the intervention were advised to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
