A dramatic scene unfolded in Aba, Abia State, after a man allegedly accosted a woman on the street, grabbed her and insisted that she was his wife who had run away from their matrimonial home about a year ago.
The incident, captured in a video which has gone viral on social media, showed the man confronting the visibly distressed woman and laying claim to her despite her repeated denial.
The man reportedly told people who gathered at the scene that he married the woman about a year ago in Lagos but that she later abandoned their home and disappeared.
He claimed that he had been searching for her and had visited her supposed family home in an attempt to locate her.
According to accounts accompanying the footage, the man said he was Hausa but could speak Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba.
He further claimed that during one of his visits to the woman’s supposed family home, he was told that she had travelled to Cotonou, Benin Republic.
However, the woman raised an alarm and repeatedly denied knowing him, insisting that she had never met him before.
The man’s claims reportedly triggered questions from bystanders, some of whom demanded that he produce evidence of the alleged marriage, including photographs or other proof to establish their relationship.
The situation attracted attention as the man allegedly refused to let the woman go, maintaining that she was his wife.
The footage has since generated heated reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the woman’s safety and questioning the man’s claims.
While some social media users suspected that the incident could have been an attempted abduction disguised as a marital dispute, others called for police intervention to establish the identities of the parties and determine what actually happened.
The identities of the man and woman, as well as the circumstances surrounding the alleged marriage, have not been independently established.
