The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees and the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions, NUBIFIE, said they would embark on strike if the attacks on them and their workplaces is not forbore.

Bankers and banks’ properties have been object of attacks by irate customers and hoodlum, indignant at the cash crunch, arising from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s phasing out old N200, N500 and N1000 denominations and introduction of new naira notes in line with the apex bank’s cashless policy.

Rumour that commercial banks are culpable in the cash scarcity induced mob actions, with several banks and bank staff attacked.

If the tide of the attacks on bankers and banks’properties is not stemmed in the next one week, bank staff would resolve to down tool.

This is according to President of NUBIFIE, Anthony Abakpa, in an interview he granted Punchng.

Quoting Abakpa, the publication wrote, “Nigerians are suffering and bank workers are also the target. Customers are venting their anger on staff members, who are also our members.

“The CBN is the sole regulatory body that supervises banks. So, if it gives certain amounts to Bank A or Bank B, it should be able to supervise them and know which bank is doing the right thing. If nothing is done within a week, I think we will mobilise to shut down.”
